East Coast Travel Pass Route Options

This trip offers THREE amazing travel pass routes so you can see the best of Australia's East Coast by bus, train and ferry. Routes can be completed in a minimum tour time or you can make the most of the 12 months validity on your travel pass and hop off to stay a little longer in any of the destinations en route.

The travel pass route includes several compulsory overnight stop-off experiences, where you will enjoy unique adventures and activities. The cost of these is not included in the trip price.

Byron Bay – Brisbane – Noosa - Rainbow Beach

Rainbow Beach – Emu Park

Jump on a local bus today then switch transport and make tracks on the 'Spirit of Queensland' train travelling to Rockhampton. A local bus then takes you to a beautiful beach resort in Emu Park. Chill out by the pool with a few beers and soak up the sun in this gorgeous location.

While here, you can opt to join an awesome Treasure Island Overnight Experience. Jump aboard a ferry that’ll transfer you to Great Keppel Island, a stunning island of 17 beaches and incredible crystal-clear waters. You can spend your day here snorkeling in the sea, looking out for colourful marine life, and stretching out on the warm white sands. You’ll also enjoy a treasure hunt activity around the island. If you booked the Treasure Island Overnight Experience you’ll head back to the mainland this morning. Enjoy exploring the pretty coastal town of Emu Park. Relax by the pool or opt to visit some crocs at a local crocodile park (extra cost).

Then catch an overnight train towards Airlie Beach. This modern train is not a sleeper train, but has comfortable, large reclining seats, a bar and a dining carriage. Arrive into the town of Proserpine in the morning, then take a local bus to Airlie Beach, the gateway to the wonderful Whitsunday Islands. Here your knowledgeable guide will teach you all about the Great Barrier Reef.

Airlie Beach – Magnetic Island

From Rockhampton, catch an overnight train towards Airlie Beach. This modern train is not a sleeper train, but has comfortable, large reclining seats, a bar and a dining carriage. Arrive into the town of Proserpine in the morning, then take a local bus to Airlie Beach, the gateway to the wonderful Whitsunday Islands. Here your knowledgeable guide will give you a session teaching you all about the Great Barrier Reef.

A local bus takes you out of Airlie Beach to the train, followed by a ferry ride out to tropical Magnetic Island. A local transfer takes you to your island accommodation, the perfect base from which to discover the wonders of the island. Nearly 50% of Magnetic Island is National Park, and the island boasts amazing beaches and abundant wildlife. You will enjoy a guided walk around the island. Magnetic Island – Tully

Depart Magnetic Island and head to Tully for an optional Rainforest Experience. Visit a swimming hole at the edge of the rainforest before spending the night in a historic country pub. The next morning you will rise early to climb to the top of Mt Tyson! This stunning mountain is blanketed with gorgeous rainforest and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Then, it’s back to the pub for a champagne breakfast! Does life get any better than this?

Sydney - Barrington Tops

An 8am start sees you say goodbye to Sydney and head out of the big city to the famous wine-making area of the Hunter Valley. Sip some delicious local wine at one of Australia's historic vineyards before travelling on through stunning countryside to your next stop, the World Heritage area of Barrington Tops National Park.

Staying in a wonderful private lodge on the edge of the National Park, your accommodation overlooks the impressive Barrington River. Opt to ride down the scenic river on an inner tube (extra cost). Arrival information

You will need to arrange your own arrival into one of the starting locations for this East Coast trip. This will either be Byron Bay, Sydney or Cairns depending on the pass route you choose. Trips run at least three times a week from each starting point and your travel pass will then be valid for 12 months from your departure date. As the trip departs early you should arrange your arrival for at least the day before your East Coast tour begins. 

Accommodation & meals

No accommodation is included as part of this flexible travel pass, but in each overnight location you will have accommodation reserved for you, so you don’t have to worry about where you will be staying. These will range from shared dorm rooms in hostels (at an average cost of AUD28 per person per night) to en suite twin or double rooms in motels (average cost AUD100); the cost of which needs to be paid locally. Overnight stop-off locations en route include Byron Bay, Noosa, and Airlie Beach. 

Unique Scheduled Overnight Stays

Each travel pass includes some scheduled overnight stops in locations off the beaten track, complete with amazing and unique adventures and experiences.:

  • Barrington Tops Overnight Stay: AUD 60 (Pass 2 only): Stay on the edge of Barrington Tops National Park, in a private lodge overlooking the Barrington River. Fishing included. 
  • Surf Camp Overnight Stay approx. AUD 60 (Pass 2 only): Stay at a beautiful beachside location in a laid-back surf camp.
  • Remote River Camp Overnight Stay: AUD 50 (Pass 2 only): Swim in an inlet in the Solitary Islands Marine Reserve and camp beside the river overnight. Activities included.
  • Treasure Island Overnight Stay (All passes): Cruise across to Great Keppel Island and enjoy snorkelling, turtle spotting and a treasure hunt adventure. 
  • Tully Rainforest Experience (Pass 1 & 2 only): Visit a swimming hole, spend the night in a historic country pub and enjoy a sunrise mountain hike and champagne breakfast.

In some locations you will be camping in remote campsites, but permanent toilets and shelter areas are provided. 

Overnight Train

You will also spend one night on an overnight train travelling from Rockhampton to Airlie Beach. The train does not have sleeper carriages, but it is modern and comfortable, with reclining seats, a bar and a dining car.

Independent Travel Time

If you choose to hop on and off for some more independent travel you will be responsible for finding and paying for your own accommodation, although your helpful tour guides will be able to advise you of the best local options.

Meals

Meals are not included on this trip. Self-catering options are sometimes available, or the group often chooses to go out for a meal together. Australia is bursting with restaurants and cafes, so you’re never far from a good, cheap meal. Vegetarian and gluten-free options are readily available. In some unique overnight stays the package will include meals. 

Minimum age & eligibility

For this trip there is a minimum age requirement of 18.

All visitors to Australia (excepting those from New Zealand) will require a visa or Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) to enter. These must be applied for before departure, and if you’re planning on working in Australia whilst you’re out here, you’ll need a Working Holiday Visa. If you are just heading to Australia for fun however, an ETA should suffice. Both visas can be applied for online.

Fraser Island Add-On: In order to drive a 4x4 on Fraser Island you must be aged 21 or over and have a full, clean, manual driving license. If you do not have this, you’ll have to explore the island from the passenger seat!
