Further trip information

Day 1: Chiang Mai to Mae Weng. Welcome to the tuk tuk club! Meet the team in Chiang Mai for the transfer to Mae Wang. Get to know your driver and pimped up tuk tuk, before lunch at a local restaurant. Then head into the countryside, stopping a temple to receive a blessing from the monks. Enjoy a traditional Thai dinner and live music with the group this evening.

Day 2: Hill tribe trek and elephants. We’re off to an ethical elephant project today. Stop en route to hike through forest to a jewel-like waterfall. Take a dip before exploring a local hill tribe village. Then we’ll meet the ellies! Spend the afternoon with the animals, feeding and bathing them. This afternoon, we’ll drift down the river on bamboo rafts – what a day!

Day 3: Mountain roads. Hop in your trusty tuk tuk and travel along twisty country roads towards Thailand’s highest mountain. Stop to sample local food en route. On arrival at Doi Inathon we’ll head into the National Park and climb to the summit, before enjoying a traditional Thai barbecue this evening – yum!

Day 4: Doi Inthanon National Park. Today we’ll be trekking through Doi Inthanon National Park. Together with an expert guide, we’ll walk through forests and beautiful countryside, stopping for a leaf-wrapped packed lunch in a clearing. In the evening we’ll relax at our accommodation with a traditional countryside Thai feast.

Day 5: Head home or travel to Mae Sariang. If you’ve booked the 5-day tour, this is where your adventure ends and you’ll be transferred back to Chiang Mai. If you’ve booked the 11-day tour, you’ll be heading towards our next destination, Mae Sariang. Check into your elegant riverside accommodation and chill out by the pool, or take the opportunity to go out and explore the town.

Days 6 – 7: Mae Hong Son. We’ll have plenty of stops on today’s scenic route, before arriving late afternoon. The eco-resort we’re staying in really has the ‘wow’ factor with an infinity pool and one of the best sunset bars we’ve ever been to (Brad and Angelina stayed here!). Day 7 is free. Wander into town, go on a forest trek from the resort, or simply relax by the pool.

Days 8-9: Pai. Put your road trip playlist on, sit back and enjoy some stunning views today. Stop for lunch at Lod Caves before arriving at our accommodation in the afternoon. This stunning resort has villa style rooms and a chic swimming pool. Relax at the resort or head into Pai to explore the nightlife. On day 9 you’ll have a free day. There are waterfalls, canyons and hot springs round Pai that you can explore, but you might find it hard to tear yourself away from the pool...

Day 10: Mae Weng. Set off early today for the last leg of our incredible journey. Stop at various communities and take in more breath-taking views along the way, before reaching base camp in Mae Weng by late afternoon. Later, we’ll head out for one final group meal and to share our memories of our tuk tuk adventure.

Day 11: Chiang Mai and farewell. It’s time to say goodbye, so give your trusty tuk tuk a hug, swap details with new friends, and take the transfer back to Chiang Mai – we’ll leave around midday to give everyone the chance to have a lay in before heading off.

Arrival information

The tour starts at 10am on day 1 at Chiang Mai Gate hotel in Chiang Mai city. You’ll need to arrive in Chiang Mai the day before or earlier.

If you’ve booked the 5-day trip, you’ll be taken back to Chiang Mai just before midday on day 5.

For those on the 11-day tour, the adventure ends in Chiang Mai on day 11, late morning to early afternoon. We recommend that you don’t arrange flights home that evening until after 7pm, or if you can, the following day, regardless of which trip length you go with.

Accommodation & meals

10 nights of accommodation are included. You’ll stay in high quality, 4-star accommodation with a hand-picked selection of riverside hotels, jungle hideaways and boutique resorts with individual villa style rooms.

  • Nights 1,2 and 10 will be spent in Mae Weng in a hotel set in pretty grounds, in a peaceful area of the city.
  • On nights 3 and 4, you’ll stay in the Doi Inathon forest huts in a breath-taking location. While the huts are not luxurious, it’s an immersive cultural experience and the setting more than makes up for it!
  • On night 5 you’ll be staying right on the riverbank in Mae Sairang. A beautiful teak structure set in lush surroundings, it’s the perfect place to relax after a day out on the road.
  • Nights 6 and 7 will be spent in a stunning eco-resort in Mae Hong Son. Surrounded by forest and rice fields and featuring a stunning infinity pool and epic sunset bar, this accommodation really has the ‘wow’ factor – so much so that Brad and Angelina stayed here a number of times!
  • On nights 8 and 9, you’ll be staying on the outskirts of Pai in individual villa style rooms. The resort also has a stylish swimming pool.

Most rooms are twin share with air con and en suite facilities, apart from the forest huts in Doi Inathon which are on a twin, triple or quad share basis and are fan cooled (air con isn’t necessary in the mountains).

Meals

Breakfast will be provided on each day of your trip apart from the first (10 breakfasts). You’ll also enjoy 4 lunches and 5 dinners with us. You’ll have the freedom to eat wherever and whenever you like for the rest of the time. Thai food is very affordable and absolutely delicious. Let us know before you go if you have any dietary requirements.

Minimum age & eligibility

You must be at least 18 years old to join this trip.

British passport holders arriving by land or air can enter Thailand for 30 days without a visa. If you need to stay longer, it’s possible to extend your stay once, for up to 30 days. If you plan to stay in Thailand longer than 30 days, to work or use land borders regularly you must get a visa before you travel.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months following your date of entry to Thailand. Entry is usually refused if you have a passport which is damaged or has pages missing. Immigration officials may ask you for proof of onward travel (e.g. a return or onward air ticket) or adequate finances. You may also need a yellow fever certificate.

Please note: Visa rules are subject to change. It’s your responsibility to ensure that information is valid at the time of travel.

Covid safety

This trip is designed with your safety and wellbeing in mind. As a result of Covid-19, many of our suppliers and partners around the world are introducing new policies and procedures surrounding health and safety in response to the Coronavirus outbreak. As the state of travel is evolving these new safety measures will adapt over time, and will be different for each trip. Here are some of the changes you may see on your trip:

Arrival safety meetings
Most trips have an arrival meeting on the first day where the guide or local team will run through the trip, the safety protocols, and to answer any questions you may have. Now more than ever it is important you arrive in time for these meetings.

Updated hygiene and safety procedures
Our suppliers and partners have health and safety procedures in place on all of our trips. These protocols will be updated and adapted as a response to the Coronavirus outbreak, dependent on local restrictions and laws.

Transport and accommodation choices
Our suppliers and partners choose the accommodation and transport on our trips very carefully, and you may see a change to what would normally be used as a response to the outbreak. This may involve such changes as enhanced use of private transport or quieter accommodation.

Trained and knowledgeable staff
Our staff in the UK are trained to help you with your trip before you depart and answer any questions you may have. In addition, the local team and guides on our trips are there to help with any health and safety concerns and to ensure our trips run safely and smoothly.

Reduced group sizes
Some trips will run with reduced group sizes to start with. You may find that trips are more intimate and chilled, whilst still being packed with fun and adventure.

Healthcare
Your guide or the local team will be on hand to help you seek medical attention should you require it during your trip. As medical facilities and standards can vary around the world, you should ensure you have adequate travel insurance in place before you depart to cover you for any medical emergencies.

24/7 emergency support
We operate an emergency phone line for our travellers abroad. This is operated by a UK based member of staff 24/7 if you have a genuine emergency or urgent matter that you need attending.

It is important that you take measures to make travelling safer for yourself and others around you. Ensure you frequently wash your hands, cover your face when you sneeze and cough, bring and use your own hand sanitiser and facial coverings/masks, and enable social distancing where necessary. You should also ensure you listen to the instructions and guidance of the local team at all times, and follow all local laws and restrictions.
