Arrival and Orientation
You will arrive into Bangkok on day one, where you will be met at the airport and taken to a Bangkok hostel. During your two night stay in Bangkok, you will receive an orientation and a city tour. You will then be transferred to the project location.
When you arrive at the project you will receive a full orientation, introducing you to the healthcare project and giving you all the information you need to know about your medical internship role.
Set in Surin, in the rural heart of Thailand, this medical internship project offers the opportunity for medical/healthcare/nursing students and professionals to gain healthcare experience abroad. Working hours are 8am-3pm Monday-Thursday, with Fridays and weekends being time off. Please note these are subject to change and are dependent on the needs of the project.
Your daily volunteer duties will include visiting patients in their homes and participating in healthcare education schemes in the local community. You will be transferred to your volunteer location daily, where you will work alongside local coordinators and translators as part of a valuable volunteering team.
Duties may include:
- Conducting general health checks and taking weight, height and waist measurements
- Participating in the Hypertension Clinic; focusing on blood pressure, weight and BMI
- Screening patients for diabetes
- Healthcare education sessions about problems such as Dengue Fever, Hand Foot and Mouth disease and about the Birth Control programme
- Assisting at home visits
- Assessing child development in the community
- Participating in the school health check programme including educating young students about the importance of basic hygiene
- Medically qualified participants MAY be able to assist with the diagnosing of illnesses and treatment (at the discretion of local medical professionals)
- Qualified and experienced nurses MAY be able to assist with occasional dressing of wounds, sutures, or injections (at the discretion of local medical professionals)
- Assisting with clinics at the local temple, running health checks for the monks
- Participating in ‘pap’ / ‘smear’ test screening (subject to qualifications and professional approval)
- Packing the medications and medical materials

To begin your Thai travels, you’ll need to arrive into Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok between 6am and 10pm on your start date where you’ll be met and taken directly to your Bangkok accommodation for a two night stay. Airport pickup is included. You will then travel by train (accompanied by a guide) to Surin. Please note that at certain times of the year the train journey may be replaced by coach travel.
You can depart at any time on your end date. A return transfer back to Bangkok is not included but the local team can help you arrange this. As the journey from Surin to Bangkok takes around 7 hours we strongly recommend you spend an extra night in Bangkok after your programme and fly home the day after your programme ends. Our co-ordinators in country can help you book an extra night in Bangkok.
Accommodation in a volunteer house is included for the duration of your stay in Thailand. You will spend your first two nights staying in a hostel in Bangkok. The rest of the time you will be staying in a volunteer house in Surin, in the heart of rural Thailand. The house is very basic but comfortable, located close to amenities including supermarkets, markets, internet cafes and ATM’s. The volunteer house has several shared bedrooms, bathrooms with showers, a kitchen and a living space. Volunteers will generally stay in multi-share rooms (sleeping 3-5 people) which include beds, bedding, basic storage, fan, and electric sockets. Wi-Fi is available.
Please note that it can get very hot in the volunteer house, particularly in the summer months, so do plan your trip with the weather and season in mind. You may feel more comfortable in the cooler months. Speak to a trip advisor for more details.
Meals are not included, but eating out is cheap, easy and tasty in Thailand. Alternatively, you can buy ingredients and prepare your own meals in the volunteer kitchen. We recommend you budget around £6-8 per day for food.
The volunteer house is conveniently located within a 5-minute walk of restaurants, food stalls, bars and stores and the project office is less than 5 minutes away on foot.
The minimum age to participate on this programme is 19.
This programme is available to medical, healthcare and nursing university students with who have completed at least one year of studies, or to experienced medical and healthcare professionals.
Without a visa, British nationals arriving by air can remain in the country for a maximum of 30 days, though if you arrive across a land border you can only stay for 15 days.
If you wish to stay for longer, you will need to apply for a visa before you depart the UK. It’s your responsibility to obtain the necessary visas for your time away. Visa rules are subject to change without prior notice, so please do check visa requirements at the time of your trip.
On this particular programme, as you’ll be working with children, you’ll need to undergo an enhanced DBS previously known as CRB, or Criminal Record Bureau check and will need to have a clean criminal record.
DBS checks may list past convictions, cautions, reprimands, warnings, and if applicable will show whether or not you have been barred from working with certain vulnerable groups. Non-conviction information such as fixed penalties may also be included.
There is an addition cost for the DBS check, please speak to your travel advisor at the time of booking. The DBS process is in 3 stages:
1. Once we receive your booking payment, you will then be sent an online application link for the DBS check, which you will need to complete.
2. Once you have completed the application, the DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) will need verification of your identity - to do this you will need to take 3 original documents to your nearest crown post office and use their DBS and ID verification service. This costs approximately £9 and is payable directly to the Post Office.
3. Once the post office verification is done it usually takes up to 2 weeks for your DBS to be processed, and your DBS will be sent to you directly in the post.
This trip is designed with your safety and wellbeing in mind. As a result of Covid-19, many of our suppliers and partners around the world are introducing new policies and procedures surrounding health and safety in response to the Coronavirus outbreak. As the state of travel is evolving these new safety measures will adapt over time, and will be different for each trip. Here are some of the changes you may see on your trip:
Arrival safety meetings
Most trips have an arrival meeting on the first day where the guide or local team will run through the trip, the safety protocols, and to answer any questions you may have. Now more than ever it is important you arrive in time for these meetings.
Proof of vaccination or negative covid test
For the safety of all travellers, at the start of some trips you may be required to show evidence that you are fully vaccinated (14 days after your second dose) and/or show evidence of a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of the tour start date in order to join the programme.
Updated hygiene and safety procedures
Our suppliers and partners have health and safety procedures in place on all of our trips. These protocols will be updated and adapted as a response to the Coronavirus outbreak, dependent on local restrictions and laws.
Transport and accommodation choices
Our suppliers and partners choose the accommodation and transport on our trips very carefully, and you may see a change to what would normally be used as a response to the outbreak. This may involve such changes as enhanced use of private transport or quieter accommodation.
Trained and knowledgeable staff
Our staff in the UK are trained to help you with your trip before you depart and answer any questions you may have. In addition, the local team and guides on our trips are there to help with any health and safety concerns and to ensure our trips run safely and smoothly.
Reduced group sizes
Some trips will run with reduced group sizes to start with. You may find that trips are more intimate and chilled, whilst still being packed with fun and adventure.
Your guide or the local team will be on hand to help you seek medical attention should you require it during your trip. As medical facilities and standards can vary around the world, you should ensure you have adequate travel insurance in place before you depart to cover you for any medical emergencies.
24/7 emergency support
We operate an emergency phone line for our travellers abroad. This is operated by a UK based member of staff 24/7 if you have a genuine emergency or urgent matter that you need attending.
It is important that you take measures to make travelling safer for yourself and others around you. Ensure you frequently wash your hands, cover your face when you sneeze and cough, bring and use your own hand sanitiser and facial coverings/masks, and enable social distancing where necessary. You should also ensure you listen to the instructions and guidance of the local team at all times, and follow all local laws and restrictions.
